History of TALBOTT NURSERY & POULTRY Was first founded as: YE OLE BACKYARD NURERY over 40 years ago in Nacogdoches, Texas; right after I came back from the U.S. NAVY, and my tour in the Orient. I had just finished a Bachelor's Degree in Biology, and a Communications Master's Degree at Stephen F. Austin State University, and was looking for work! A Theta Chi Fraternity Brother, J. Roden, and I had been selling St. Augustine and Centipede Grass 6 days a week, while going to school full-time and working as Lab Techs at the local hospital(also full-time)…amazing what youthfullness can do…at 72, I can't quite keep that up any longer…chuckle!! A year or two later I changed the name to BACKYARD NURSERY, INC. Then after 10 more years, moved to Sam Rayburn, Texas; when economic times got rough!! For 25 more years I had retail establishments with a convenience store, Lakeside sales/rental of boats, jet skis, Charter Bass fishing, motel, RV park, and exotic game farm…..and I taught part-time, then moved to the Houston area and taught full-time at Community Colleges using my degrees, (by that time I had picked up other Master's work in both Educational Leadership and U.S., World, and Texas History). In 2010; I was laid off with the economic crunch and a dispute with an Asst. Dean, so I went back to "WHAT BRUNG ME", as they say in East Texas!!! All that time, growing most anything was a passion….from birds to plants! Now we specialize in ORCHIDS, BOUGAINVILLEA, AZALEAS, CRAPE MYRTLES, ANTIQUE ROSES, and we have now expanded to Edibles like Fruit Trees, Grape Vines, and Berry vines, and Citrus Trees. We also have Camellias, Flowering Landscape Shrubs and Trees and ShadeTrees, Ferns/Heuchera/Hosta, and Grasses and Ground Covers...and we have just added Spring and Fall Bulbs, Seeds, Vegetable Plants, Hanging Baskets, Annuals/Perennials, Pottery, Hard Goods: Bark, Soils, Insecticides, Fungicides, Herbicides. MOTHER NATURE has pretty well put us out of the Poultry Business...AS BANTAMS, DUCKS, GEESE, AND PIGEONS AT THE FARM were mostly for my pleasure and not so much for sale….RIGHT NOW WE HAVE OVER 300 VARIETIES OF ORCHIDS, 70+ VARIETIES OF BOUGAINVILLEA, 60+ V. ROSES, 70+ V. AZALEAS, 50 V. CRAPE MYRTLES... We welcome you to our website, as well as extend you and invitation to come and visit our 3-Acre location in Jasper, Texas 75951.
